Question 1

How do I become a gas engineer in London or Essex?

Accepted Answer

There are two main routes. If you don't have an employer, take the Managed Learning Programme (MLP) plus ACS assessment as a private learner. If a company will employ you, take the Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative apprenticeship, which is government funded. Both are available at FC Training Academy in Ilford, East London.

Question 2

How much does an ACS reassessment cost, and how long does it take?

Accepted Answer

At FC Training Academy, the domestic ACS reassessment costs £1,200 and takes 5 days.

Question 3

How much does it cost to become a gas engineer?

Accepted Answer

The private MLP + ACS route costs £6,500 and covers training, portfolio support and ACS assessment. The apprenticeship route has no course fee for the apprentice because it is funded through the employer.

Question 4

MLP or apprenticeship: which route is right for me?

Accepted Answer

Choose the MLP if you don't have an employer and want to train privately at your own pace. Choose the apprenticeship if a construction, plumbing or heating company will employ you on their payroll, because the government funds the training.

Question 5

What do I need for an ACS reassessment?

Accepted Answer

You need your previous ACS certificates, including core gas safety (CCN1), boilers and water heaters (CENWAT) and gas fires (HTR1). Bring copies when you book.

Question 6

Is the Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative apprenticeship funded?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It is funded by the government through the employer's apprenticeship funding. The apprentice pays nothing. Some employers make a small contribution depending on company size.

Question 7

Do I need an employer for the apprenticeship?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You must be employed on the company's payroll, normally for 30 hours a week. Part-time from 16 hours a week may be possible with a longer programme.

Question 8

How do I enrol?

Accepted Answer

Fill in the form online, or register at the centre. You complete a short enrolment form and a brief, informal interview about the course and any experience you have.
